Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
